The present invention relates to a near field communication (NFC) device including a resonance unit and an NFC chip. The resonance unit radiates a first electromagnetic wave in a reader mode to make communications with an external NFC card. The NFC chip measures the size of an antenna voltage generated from the resonance unit while the resonance unit radiates the first electromagnetic wave and controls the resonance unit to stop radiating the first electromagnetic wave in the case that the size of the antenna voltage oscillates. The NFC device effectively may detect an external NFC reader while being operated in the reader mode and may switch to a card mode.
