An electric rail carriage 10 powered by power modules 22 comprises a main chassis (12 fig 2) and power module bays 26 underneath the main chassis, the power modules are removably located in the bays. The power module may be inserted by horizontal movement and/or movement transverse to the longitudinal axis of the carriage. The bays may comprise parallel guide rails 76, a stop (80 fig 6), a support 70, 72 with an upper surface from which a power module can hang, locating pins (74 fig 8) arranged to locate within location openings 64 on the power module and/or a securing mechanism 78 which may include a clamp (86 fig 8). The power module comprises a main structural support frame 28, an arrangement for generating electric power and an electric outlet (52 fig 4). The arrangement for generating electric power may be a diesel engine, battery or fuel cell. There may be an air compressor and compressed air outlet. The power module can be quickly removed from the bay. Also disclosed is a set of electric rail carriage power modules, a method for installing a power module in an electric rail carriage and a method for replacing a power module. |
