A wound dressing has a wound contacting layer 2, containing one or more antimicrobial agents, and an absorption layer 3. The lateral wicking rate of the wound contact layer is the same or higher than that of the absorbent layer, preferably with fluid dispersing across the entire wound contact layer in one to five seconds. The absorbency of the wound contact layer may be less than 20g/g whilst the absorbency of the absorbent layer is preferably higher. The wound contact layer may be made from open-celled polyurethane foam compressed from 3 mm to 1.5 mm thickness and containing an antimicrobial agent such as chlorhexidine gluconate. The absorbent layer may also be a polyurethane foam, backed by a polyurethane film. There may be a second absorbent layer of superabsorbent material. The antimicrobial may be applied to the wound contact layer as a solution. |
