Water-soluble condensation products are prepared by reacting formaldehyde or a substance, e.g. a polymer thereof which yields formaldehyde under the reaction conditions in neutral or alkaline solution with an N : N1-bis-[1,3,5-triazinyl-(6)] derivative of 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid, the triazine rings each containing at least one free amino group and, if desired, further substituents comprising one or more water-solubilizing groups. The products have good affinity for cellulosic materials and may be used to improve the fastness to water of dyeings, for textile dressings, e.g. crease-proof dressings resistant to boiling water. The products exhibit in ultra-violet light strong blue-white fluorescence and may be used to brighten or lighten the appearance of organic materials having a white to yellowish white appearance. The examples describe the condensation with 30 per cent formaldehyde of (1) and (2) 4 : 41-(N.N1-bis-[2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazinyl-(6)]) -diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid in weakly alkaline solution. The product can be used in aqueous solution or can be precipitated as a water-soluble powder by addition of sodium chloride; (3) 4,41-(N.N1-bis-[2 - amino - 4 - (m - sulphophenyl-) amino- 1,3,5-triazinyl - (6)])-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid; (4) 4,41-(N,N1-bis-[2-amino-4-(m-carboxyphenyl-)amino - 1,3,5 - triazynl - (6)]) - diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid. The starting material of examples (1) and (2) is obtained from the sodium salt of 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid and 2 molecular proportions of cyanuric halide. Further reaction with ammonia and 1-aminobenzene-3-sulphonic acid yields the starting material of example (3) or with ammonia and 1-aminobenzene-3-carboxylic acid the starting material of example (4). It is stated that the 2-amino-4-phenylamino-1,3,5-triazinyl derivative may be similarly prepared. U.S.A. Specification 2,089,413 is referred to. |
