A flex-tolerant electronic document reading device, or e-reader, comprises a pixellated flexible display screen laminated onto a flexible active matrix backplane having a plastic substrate. A frame plate 1050 is located between the active matrix backplane and a control circuit board 1054 mounting control electronics for the e-reader. The frame plate 1050 extends over and beyond an active area of the display screen. The combination of the flexible active matrix backplane and the display screen 1007 is laminated onto the frame plate 1050. The frame plate 1050 has at least one frame plate datum point (1052) where the frame plate is attached to a flex-tolerant housing for the display screen, active matrix backplane and control circuit board. The frame plate 1050 is attached to the housing to hold the frame plate in fixed alignment with the housing and to stiffen the combination of flex-tolerant housing and flexible backplane and display screen. The display screen may be an electrophoretic display screen and the frame plate may be a metal frame plate.
