The invention relates to a method of controlling packets in a data packet network. Packets sent from a source node to a receiver node are marked as queuable or unqueuable. Queuable packets (BE) are stored in a buffer at the receiver node, but unqueuable packets (UQ) are only stored if the buffer is empty, and otherwise discarded. Using a TCP slow start mechanism, queuable packets (54) are sent initially, followed by unqueuable packets (56, 57). Acknowledgments (59) from the receiver indicate how many unqueuable packets have been lost e.g. due to a bottleneck in the network, and the source node adjusts its packet transmission rate accordingly. |
