580,600. Transformers. FRIES, E. Aug. 26, 1943, No. 13936. [Class 38 (ii)] A transformer with adjustable leakage reactance has a magnetic shunt mounted in a space between the concentric primary and secondary coils, the shunt comprising a stationary part 4<11> fixed to the transformer core and carrying one or more slide rails 6 and a movable part 4<1> that slides along the rails and is pressed against them by bolts 7 and spring washers 8. The movement may be effected by rotation of a knob 12 which thus varies the air gap between the two parts 4<1>, 4<11>. The transformer, which is specially adapted for arc welding, may be energized from a three-phase circuit as shown in Fig. 6. To obtain balance in such a circuit for varying loads, the reactance 32 is varied simultaneously with the varying of the shunt air gap, and in Fig. 3, the reactance coil is mounted on a core 15 also adjusted by the knob 12 so as to vary an air gap 19. In other balanced arrangements, a capacity is simultaneously varied with the leakage reactance, by successive operation of a number of mercury switches. |
