摘要 A method and apparatus of automatically locating in an image of a blood vessel the lumen boundary at a position in the vessel and from that measuring the diameter of the vessel. From the diameter of the vessel and estimated blood flow rate, a number of clinically significant physiological parameters are then determined and various user displays of interest generated. One use of these images and parameters is to aid the clinician in the placement of a stent. The system, in one embodiment, uses these measurements to allow the clinician to simulate the placement of a stent and to determine the effect of the placement. In addition, from these patient parameters various patient treatments are then performed.

A method of automatically identifying a lumen boundary in a vascular image comprising the steps of: collecting data in a blood vessel as a set of scan lines by optical coherence tomography; generating a binary mask using the collected set of scan lines using a computer, wherein the binary mask is generated using an intensity threshold; defining a plurality of scan lines in the binary mask; identifying a region as lumen boundary tissue on each scan line of the plurality of scan lines; defining contour segments in response to the plurality of scan lines and the region of lumen boundary tissue on each scan line of the plurality of scan lines; identifying valid neighboring contour segments in the plurality of scan lines; interpolating missing contour data between valid neighboring contour segments, wherein the valid neighboring contour segments and the interpolated missing contour data define the lumen boundary; and generating the vascular image from the set of scan lines; and displaying the vascular image and the lumen boundary on a display.
