A method of forming a metallic wetting layer on the surface of a metal component is provided, including the steps of placing the component into a chemical vapor deposition furnace, placing a metal-containing salt in the furnace, and heating the component and the metal-containing salt in the furnace to cause the metal from the metal-containing salt to deposit in a coating on the surface of the component forming a metallic wetting layer that improves the metallic bond of a subsequently applied brazing material. The process can be practiced with the addition of a cleaning reagent to both clean and coat in one operation. |

1. A method of forming a metallic wetting layer on the surface of a metal component, comprising:
placing the component into a furnace; placing a cleaning reagent and a metal-containing salt in the furnace; heating the component, the cleaning reagent, and the metal-containing salt in the furnace to a first temperature to cause the cleaning reagent to evolve a cleaning constituent that at least partially reacts with contaminants on the surface of the component whereby the reacted contaminants are removed from the surface; and, following cleaning, further heating the component and the metal-containing salt to raise the temperature thereof to a second temperature greater than the first temperature to cause the metal-containing salt to evolve metal that deposits in a coating on the surface of the component, wherein the metal coating forms a metallic wetting layer capable of facilitating wetting of subsequent application of a brazing alloy. |
