A method for steam reforming carbonaceous material into synthesis gas, said method comprising: feeding an input of carbonaceous material into a steam reforming rotary kiln; agitating the carbonaceous material using the steam reforming rotary kiln; externally heating the steam reforming rotary kiln to heat the carbonaceous material within the rotary kiln to an elevated reforming temperature of from about 650 to 1100° C. in the presence of water or steam, and without addition of carbon dioxide, and wherein the steam reforming rotary kiln is sealed from the atmosphere to prevent the entry of air or oxygen; reforming the carbonaceous material such that the carbonaceous material undergoes substantially complete conversion utilizing only a steam reforming reaction to form synthesis gas comprising primarily hydrogen and carbon monoxide and a minimal amount of inert solid slag.
