Methods, apparatuses, and computer program products for collective operation management in a parallel computer are provided. Embodiments include a parallel computer having a first compute node operatively coupled for data communications over a tree data communications network with a plurality of child compute nodes. Embodiments also include each child compute node performing a first collective operation. The first compute rode, for each child compute node, receives from the child compute node, a result of the first collective operation performed by the child compute node. In response to receiving at least one result, the first compute node reduces a power consumption level of the child compute node.

An apparatus for collective operation management in a parallel computer, the parallel computer including a first compute node operatively coupled for data communications over a tree data communications network with a plurality of child compute nodes, the apparatus comprising a computer processor and a computer memory operatively coupled to the computer processor, the computer memory having disposed within it computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the apparatus to carry out the steps of:
performing, by each child compute node, a first collective operation; for each child compute node, receiving from the child compute node, by the first compute node, a result of the first collective operation performed by the child compute node; and in response to receiving at least one result, reducing, by the first compute node, a power consumption level of the child compute node and each compute node beneath the child compute node in the tree data communication network.
