The present invention relates to a skin whitening cosmetic composition including an extract of roots of Coix lachryma-jobi var. mayuen or a solvent fraction thereof, a skin whitening food composition, a health functional food for preventing or relieving a pigmentation disease including the composition, and a pharmaceutical composition for treating a pigmentation disease. The composition including an extract of roots of Coix lachryma-jobi var. mayuen or a solvent fraction thereof does not stimulate the skin, has low cytotoxicity while inhibiting generation of melanin, controls tyrosinase activity to be used as a skin whitening functional cosmetic, and a health functional food preventing or relieving a skin pigmentation disease or an agent of a skin pigmentation disease.
