The present invention relates to a liquid crystalline medium having negative or positive dielectric anisotropy and including components of the low molecular weight and polymerization components. The polymerization component contains self-alignment polymerizable mesogen (polymerizable self-alignment additive) executing homeotropic (vertical) alignment of the liquid crystalline medium on the surface of a liquid crystal display (LC display) or a cell wall. Therefore, the present invention also includes the liquid crystal display having homeotropic alignment of the liquid crystalline medium without an alignment layer. Disclosed is a novel structure on the polymerization self-alignment additive having a functional group in a specific position. |
