PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biocatalyst for efficient production of succinic acid and/or other products from renewable biological feedstocks.SOLUTION: The invention provides strains of E.coli of high succinic acid productivity with efficient carbon flow for succinic acid production, which strains are prepared by genetic manipulation that leads to de-repression of glucose-repressed gluconeogenic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (pck), inactivation of genes of phosphotransferases by deletion etc., and inactivation of the constitutive genes of metabolic pathways such as the TCA cycle and fermentative pathways by deletion etc. The strains can produce succinic acid in a carbohydrate-containing minimal mineral salt medium with an efficiency as high as the known succinic acid-producing rumen bacteria.
