The present invention relates to a formaldehyde dehydrogenase expressed by a novel formaldehyde dehydrogenase gene and having independent reducing activity for formic acid, a method for preparing a formaldehyde dehydrogenase from a strain transformed by a recombinant expression vector including the gene, and a method for preparing formaldehyde from formic acid through the reduction reaction of the formaldehyde dehydrogenase.
