A magnetic position detection device is provided that uses a magnetic sensing unit to detect a relative movement position with a magnetic encoder having N magnetic poles and S magnetic poles disposed alternatingly in a movement direction as variation in the direction of a magnetic field from the magnetic encoder; has, provided as the magnetic sensing unit, a direction detection type magnetic resistance element having a resistance value that changes according to the direction of an applied magnetic field; and is such that the magnetic encoder has non-magnetized parts disposed at the boundaries of the N magnetic poles and S magnetic poles so that the variation caused by the movement of the magnetic encoder of the magnetic field component (Bs) that is formed at the position of the magnetic sensing unit and is in the movement direction of the magnetic encoder and the variation caused by the movement of the magnetic encoder of the magnetic field component (Br) that is formed at the position of the magnetic sensing unit and is in the direction of the opposition of the magnetic sensing unit and encoder are both roughly sinusoidal.
