The wireless device may select an operational mode from at least a first operational mode and a second operational mode based at least in part on whether the wireless medium is experiencing crowded short packet conditions. The wireless device may perform wireless communication on the wireless medium according to the selected operational mode.

A wireless device, comprising: a radio; and a processing element; wherein the radio and the processing element are configured to: perform Wi-Fi communication over a Wi-Fi network according to a first operational mode during a first period of time; monitor the Wi-Fi network, wherein said monitoring comprises detecting Wi-Fi packets communicated on the Wi-Fi network; determine packet length for each detected Wi-Fi packet; determine if a number of detected Wi-Fi packets having a packet length less than a first packet length threshold during the first period of time is greater than a first threshold number; perform Wi-Fi communication over the Wi-Fi network according to a second operational mode during a second period of time if the number of detected Wi-Fi packets having a packet length less than the first packet length threshold during the first period of time is greater than the first threshold number, wherein the second period of time is subsequent to the first period of time; and continue to perform Wi-Fi communication over the Wi-Fi network according to the first operational mode during the second period of time if the number of detected Wi-Fi packets having a packet length less than the first packet length threshold during the first period of time is less than the first threshold number.
