This invention provides an optical element, and a display device containing same, that prevents contaminants adhering to the edge thereof from spreading due to capillary action and causing discoloration. This invention consists of the following: an optical element that has a surface provided with a plurality of protrusions with a pitch less than or equal to the wavelength of visible light, wherein the contact angle of water on at least the edges of said surface is greater than or equal to 100° and the contact angle of hexadecane on at least the edges of said surface is preferably between 20° and 100°, inclusive; and a display device containing such an optical element. |
