The invention relates to a method for strapping objects, comprising the following steps: transporting of an object to a strapping station; forming of at least one loop from a strap (2) around the object by means of a strapping device; connecting the ends of the loop to one another, wherein signals are conducted, via at least one plug connection comprising a plurality of pole pairs, from an external device to the strapping device and/or from the strapping device to an external device. The problem addressed by the invention is to configure the strapping machine for flexible coupling in different environments. Said problem is solved by the following steps: coupling a pole pair with a signal channel of a programmable multi-channel digital control unit; programming the digital control unit to allocate any input signal or output signal to a particular signal channel.
