Described herein are methods of protecting germ cells in a subject from cell death induced by a chemotherapeutic agent by, in part, administering a composition comprising one or more humanin polypeptides to the subject. Also described herein are methods of inhibiting a reduction or decrease in fertility in a subject wherein the reduction or decrease in fertility is due to a chemotherapeutic agent. Also described herein are methods of enhancing chemotherapeutic treatment of a hyperproliferative disorder by, in part, administering a composition comprising one or more humanin polypeptides to a subject receiving chemotherapy.
