A system includes a plain bearing assembly 110 configured to enable rotation of a shaft 112 about a bearing system axis 22 of the shaft 112. The plain bearing assembly 110 includes the shaft 112, a cylindrical intermediate bearing 116 disposed about the shaft 112, and an external bearing 118 disposed about the intermediate bearing 116. The plain bearing assembly 110 is configured to facilitate oscillatory motion of the shaft 112 relative to the external bearing 118 such that, when the shaft rotates in a first direction about the bearing system axis 22, the intermediate bearing 116 rotates about the bearing system axis 22 in the first direction, and when the shaft 112 rotates in a second direction opposite the first direction about the bearing system axis 22, rotation of the intermediate bearing 116 about the bearing system axis 22 is resisted or prevented.
