The present disclosure provides a compound of the following formula, racemates, enantiomers, prodrugs and salts thereof:;;Also provided is the use of these compounds for the treatment of ischemia and reperfusion injuries. Further applications include the treatment of diseases caused by cell apoptosis and/or cell necrosis.

A compound of the general formula (I): wherein R1, R2, R3 are independently selected from H or OR6; R6 is R7 or R8; R7 is selected from the group comprising H, an ester, a carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, sulphate, phosphonic acid, phosphate ester, sulfamate, sulfonic ester, phosphamate, phosphonate ester, sulfonate, zwitterionic species, amino acid, amino phosphonate, acyclic amine, cyclic amine, quaternary ammonium cation, polyethylene glycol, saccharide, and dendrimer; R8 is selected from the group comprising H, saccharide, sulfonate, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, cycloalkyl and acyl, optionally interrupted by one or more heteroatom(s); or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, hydrate, solvate, prodrug and isomer thereof; and with the proviso that the compound includes at least one R7 and at one least R8 and that at least one of R7 or R8 is other than H; with the further proviso that when R2 and R3 are both OH, R1 is not —OCH3; when R1 and R2 are both OH, R3 is not —OC(O)(CH2)4CO2H; when R1 is H and R2 is OH, R3 is not —OC(O)(CH2)4CO2H.
