A drive unit 10 for a vehicle, comprising an internal combustion engine 12, at least one power take-off (PTO) 28 configured to be driven by the engine 12, a control module 32 with a memory 34 in which at least first and second characteristic curves (fig. 2, 36, 38) are stored, the control module 32 being configured to operate the ICE 12 on the basis of the first characteristic curve (fig. 2, 36) when the PTO 28 is deactivated, and the second characteristic curve (fig. 2, 38) when the PTO 28 is activated. ICE 12 is capable of providing higher torque and/or power at higher engine speeds when operated on the basis of the second characteristic curve (fig. 2, 38), in comparison with being operated on the basis of the first characteristic curve (fig. 2, 36). The control module 32 may be configured to activate the PTO 28 when a parking brake is applied, and/or when the driving speed of the vehicle is below a predetermined threshold value, which may be 3 km/h, and/or the PTO 28 may be activated by a switch. The characteristic curve (fig. 2, 36, 38) may be a power curve or a torque curve profile. |
