A computer program for identifying image capture instructions for capturing images used to generate quality depth maps. The image capture instructions indicate a quantity of images to be captured and the aperture and focus settings to be used when capturing the images for generating the quality depth map. The image capture instructions may be determined based in part on a distance estimate 602, a range of optimal blur radii 604 and camera aperture setting 606. The range of optimal blur radii ensures that there will be sufficient depth information for generating a depth map of a predetermined quality from the captured images. The program uses the optimal blur radii to determine a maximum length interval over which the optimal blur is achievable 608, uses the interval to determine the number of intervals in the whole depth range 610, 612, determines the focus setting for each interval 614 and outputs image capture instructions. |
