This application discloses a new way of operating a graphics processing unit or GPU. It works by executing a group of instructions atomically in a programmable execution unit 42, the instructions being shader programs, such as vertex, fragment, compute or geometry shaders. It will then pass a result, or use a result, that was generating by executing an instruction in the group of instructions atomically while executing the next instruction in the group. There may also be a feedback circuit that can feedback the output from the execution of one instruction to be used as the input when another instruction is being executed. The programmable execution unit may be configure so that the result of executing an instruction could be written to a register or registers for storage. It may also have selection circuitry that can select a register port to use as an input source when executing an instruction. |
