A symmetrical band of overlapping tracks 20 such that the direction of overwrite switches in the middle of the band (track #105); and the number of taken or empty tracks 3 on both sides of the band are maintained equally at all fill levels. Guard tracks 14 may be located at either the middle of a band when the overlapped section is directed towards the centre (figure 4) or at the outside edges of the band when the overlapped section is directed away from the centre (figure 6). Data may be written to the tracks such that at a first fill stage the data may be written so that there are no overlapping tracks (figure 7) thereby there is no write amplification; at a second fill stage the data may be written such that the tracks overlap symmetrically in the band, as defined above (figures 8/9). Data may be positioned based on its update frequency such that archived data (low update frequency) may be located at the bottom of the stack - where as current data (high update frequency) may be stored at the top of the stack. |
