The invention describes a method of authenticating the identity of a controller (10) of a wind turbine (1), which method comprises the steps of issuing an identity certificate (C_10) to the wind turbine controller (10); sending the identity certificate (C_10) over a secure communication channel (23) to a certificate authority (40) for validation and signing; returning a validated and signed identity certificate (C_10_vs) to the wind turbine controller (10) over the secure communication channel (23). The invention further describes an authentication system (23, 40, C_40) for authenticating the identity of a controller (10) of a wind turbine (1). The invention further describes a wind park (2) comprising a number of wind turbines (1); and an industrial control system (20) for managing the wind turbines (1) of the wind park (2); wherein the industrial control system (20) comprises an authentication system (23, 40, C_40) according to the invention for authenticating the identity of a controller (10) of a wind turbine (1) of the wind park (2).
