摘要 <p>The percentage water solubility of phenyl-b : g -dihydroxypropyl ether or nuclear substituted derivatives thereof is increased to about ten per cent by treatment with ethyl urea or propylene glycol. The ether may be mixed with the urea or glycol and then dissolved in water or dissolved straightway in an aqueous solution of either the urea or glycol. Ethers instanced are:-phenyl-, p-chlorophenyl-, o-tolyl-b g -dihydroxypropyl ethers and the propylene glycol is substantially 1 : 2-dihydroxypropane. Other methods employed are (a) preparing a solution of the ether in warm aqueous propylene glycol and then allowing to cool; (b) heating the ether mixed with propylene glycol and then adding water; (c) heating the ether with a portion of the propylene glycol and subsequently adding the remainder of the glycol and water either together or first the glycol then the water; (d) heating the ether slightly above its melting point and then adding to the propylene glycol and subsequently adding water. The last two methods are preferred for large scale practice. In Examples (1) and (2) o-tolyl- and p - chlorophenyl - b : g - dihydroxypropyl ethers are dissolved in aqueous solutions of varying strengths of ethyl urea and Examples (3), (4) and (5) illustrate the use of o-tolyl-b : g -dihydroxypropyl ether in the above methods (a), (c) and (d).ALSO:The percentage water solubility of phenyl-b : #U-dihydroxypropyl ethers and nuclear substituted derivatives thereof such as p-chlorophenyl and o -tolyl-b : #U-dihydroxypropyl ethers is increased to about 10 per cent by treatment with ethyl urea or propylene glycol (essentially 1.2 dihydroxypropane [see Group IV (b)]. Solutions obtained show anti-bacterial properties exceeding those expected by a mere increase of solubility.</p>
