584,735. Variable-speed gearing; friction clutches. FREEBORN POWER CONVERTERS, Ltd., FREEBORN, J. E., DEGENHARDT, W. R., and FRAINE, A. F. De. Feb. 3, 1944, No. 2016. [Class 80 (ii)] An epicyclic train is controlled by a slipping clutch between a reaction sun gear and the driven planet carrier, the degree of slip being controlled by both a centrifugal device and the torque transmitted. A driving toothed annulus 1 drives a planet carrier 6 which is mounted upon a sleeve 7 which carries a driven disc 9. The final driven member 24, which is shown as a toothed annulus for a further epicyclic train, is mounted upon the disc 9 to allow of a certain amount of relative angular and axial displacement controlled by centrifugal weights 28 with arms 29 engaging in slots 30. The member 24 also has a friction surface 26 and a boss 23 with helical splines 22 co-operating with corresponding splines on the boss 21 of another disc 20 secured to disc 9. The friction surface 26 of member 24 and the disc 20 engage between them clutch plates 18 of a disc 13 connected to the sun gear 12 with a pressure controlled by the speed of the driven member 24 and the torque transmitted through the centrifugal weights 28 and the helical splines 22. Reverse rotation of the sun gear is prevented by a ratchet 15 engaging in teeth 14 on disc 13. Specifications 439,828 and 439,855 are referred to. |
