<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording head which can perform recording with high density and high reliability by efficiently and locally generating near-field light and which can be manufactured easily. <P>SOLUTION: A recording head 2 comprises a slider 60 arranged to be opposed to a magnetic recording medium, a propagation part 50 for propagating an incident light beam L toward the side of an end surface 50a opposed to the surface of the magnetic recording medium, a recording element 41 for generating a recording magnetic field between a main magnetic pole 47 and an auxiliary magnetic pole 45, and a thin film near-field light generation element 70 buried in the propagation part and adapted to generate near-field light S from the propagating light beam. The near-field light generation element includes a plasmon generator 71 for generating surface plasmon by incidence of a light beam and a near-field light generation part 72 for propagating the surface plasmon toward an emission end surface 72a to generate near-field light from the emission end surface.
