<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode active material capable of achieving higher capacity and improved cycle characteristics of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. <P>SOLUTION: The negative electrode active material of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery includes graphite and a zinc alloy. The zinc alloy is represented by general formula: M<SB POS="POST">x</SB>Zn<SB POS="POST">1-x</SB>. In the general formula, M represents Ni, Cu or Fe.
