[Classes 89 (i) and 89 (ii)] Nuts, collars, washers &c. are retained on bolts, rods &c. by cross drilling the bolt and inserting a curved resilient cotter with end notches, projections or shoulders. The cotter 10, Fig. 7, has shoulders 14, Fig. 5, formed by compressing the rim laterally. The curved shape enables the cotter to be driven in as shown at 18 instead of laterally, and after insertion the resilience of the cotter causes the shoulders to engage one on each side of the thread and prevent accidental withdrawal. In modifications the shape of the shoulders varies; the cotter is formed from a flat strip 42, Fig. 19, with laterally projecting ends 40 that may vary in shape ; the cotter is reduced in thickness towards its centre to increase the flexibility ; and the shoulders are replaced by notches 30, Fig. 13. A series of notches may be provided corresponding to a number of bolt diameters.
