A formulation comprises one or more terpenoids, soy methyl esters and glycol ether esters. The terpenoid may be D-limonene. These compositions of plant oil-based biodegradable crude oil thinning fluids have a performance especially suitable to reducing crude oil viscosity in extraction and retrieval operations. Also shown is a method to recover oil from an oil well comprising (a) providing the above formulation; (b) introducing a first portion of the formulation into the oil well; (c) recovering a mixture from the oil well comprising at least a portion of the formulation and oil from the oil well. The method for producing the formulation is also shown using a stainless steel reactor and one or more terpenoids, soy methyl esters, glycol ether esters, a first inorganic catalyst and a second inorganic catalyst. |
