摘要 Disclose are methods for evaluating a user's interests and making gift recommendations using social media data. Interests and attributes of a user may be detected from social media content and products corresponding to the interests and attributes may be selected and presented as gift recommendations for the user. Methods are disclosed for resolving ambiguity as to interests reflected by textual data in social media content. Also disclosed are methods for inferring a user's interests from the interests of friends of the user.

A method for identifying interests comprising: evaluating social media data of a user; identifying from the social media data a plurality of communities each including a plurality of friends of the user, each community of the plurality of communities identified according to social media interconnections and interactions among friends of the user in each community; identifying common interests from personal interests of the plurality of friends of the user for each community of the plurality of communities; identifying, for each community of the plurality of communities, at least one characterizing interest of the common interests identified for each of the plurality of communities, the at least one characterizing interest being absent from any self-identified interests of the user in the social media data; and selecting one or more inferred interests for the user from among the at least one characterizing interests of each community of the plurality of communities; wherein identifying, for each community of the plurality of communities, at least one characterizing interest of the common interests identified for each community of the plurality of communities further comprises, for each community: performing a first ranking of the common interests identified for the each community according to popularity of the common interests identified within the each community; andselecting the at least one characterizing interest for the each community according to the first ranking; and wherein selecting the one or more inferred interests for the user from among the at least one characterizing interests of the plurality of communities further comprises: evaluating frequency of interaction of the user with the plurality of friends of the user corresponding to each community of the plurality of communities; ranking the at least one characterizing interests of the plurality of communities according to the frequency of interaction of the user with the plurality of friends of the user corresponding to each community of the plurality of communities; and selecting the one or more inferred interests according to the ranking.
