Improved hemostatic agents take the form of granules or particles that can be used to stanch, seal, or stabilize a site of hemorrhage, including a noncompressible hemorrhage.

A hemostatic chitosan material in granule or particle form having a density greater than about 0.1 g/cm3 and a granule or particle diameter of about 0.9 mm, wherein said granules or particles are produced by freeze-drying a frozen matrix of chitosan, heat-compressing said matrix, and then granulating the compressed matrix.
