Disclosed are a method for encoding/decoding an image on the basis of a polygon unit and an apparatus therefor. Specifically, the method for encoding an image on the basis of a polygon unit may comprise the steps of: dividing an input image on a block-by-block basis; determining the position of at least one point within the block; determining the position of at least one point on each side of the block; dividing the block into at least one polygon unit using the point determined within the block, and at least two points from among the vertexes of the block and the point determined on the side of the block; and encoding the input image on the basis of the polygon unit.
