This production method for an optical fiber parent material includes: a preparation step for preparing a plurality of rod-shaped first parent materials, and a plurality of second parent materials having a through-bore of generally the same shape as the outside peripheral shape of the cross section of the first parent material taken orthogonal to the lengthwise axis; and an assembly step for aligning the through-bores of the plurality of second parent materials to form a communicating bore, and inserting the plurality of first parent materials into the communicating bore in such a way that at least two of the materials line up in the direction of the lengthwise axis, producing a state of mutual fit. At at least one location in the lengthwise direction of the communicating bore, the location of mutual contact of the second parent materials and the location of mutual contact of the first parent materials are different. In so doing, there is provided a production method whereby an optical fiber parent material of elongated form, in which the core portion and the like are positioned with high accuracy, can be produced at low cost.
