The invention relates to a method for identifying an object, the method comprising the following steps: forming a nanostructure on the object by means of a laser source; capturing an image of at least part of the nanostructure; processing the image in order to extract unique points of the nanostructure; and storing information representative of the position of the unique points. In the embodiments: during the image-processing step, software is run for extracting unique points of fingerprints - the unique points comprising minutiae - and/or during the nanostructure-formation step, a laser is used of which the pulse duration is between one tenth and ten picoseconds.
