An electromagnetic retarder comprises a self-power generation type electromagnetic retarder unit and an electromagnetic retarder unit. The self-power generation type electromagnetic retarder unit has a retarder main body portion consisting of a stator yoke (9), electromagnetic coils (L1 to L12), and a steel rotating body (10), a control device (5), and a high-speed-rotation region drive device (7) having high-speed-rotation region transistors (T1 to T3), the switching of which is controlled by said control device, wherein: said electromagnetic coils form a multiphase connection; the electromagnetic coils of each phase form a resonant circuit together with capacitors (C1 to C12); and said transistors are connected to said multiphase connection in series. The electromagnetic retarder unit has a battery (13), a reverse current prevention diode (D1), and a low-speed-rotation region drive device (14) having low-speed-rotation region transistors (T4 to T6), the switching of which is controlled by a control circuit wherein said low-speed-rotation region transistors are inserted between said reverse current prevention diode (D1) connected to said battery and said multiphase connection in series. The electromagnetic retarder functions as an electromagnetic retarder in the low-speed-rotation region and as a self-power generation type retarder in the high-speed-rotation region. |
