PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions, formulations, and methods for treating thyroid eye disease and related conditions (e.g., Grave's Ophthalmopathy).SOLUTION: The methods include the step of administering, to a patient, systemic or local &bgr; adrenergic agonists (e.g., as an extended release crystalline microparticle suspension). The agonist is selected from the group consisting of salmeterol, formoterol and salts thereof, or any combination thereof. The method may further include administering a compound for reducing &bgr; adrenergic receptor desensitization (e.g., a glucocorticosteroid) prior to administering of the &bgr; adrenergic agonist or coadministering it with the &bgr; adrenergic agonist. The methods may also include locally administering to the eye an immunosuppressant agent (e.g., rapamycin) prior to administering the &bgr; adrenergic agonist. |
