A nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative in which an indole structure is fused to a benzophenanthrene ring is a novel material useful as a material for organic electroluminescence devices for the production of organic electroluminescence devices and electronic equipment.

A nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative represented by formula (1): wherein each of R1 to R12 independently represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent group, and a pair of adjacent two groups selected from R1 to R12 may be bonded to each other to form a saturated or unsaturated divalent group which completes a ring, provided that at least one pair of the adjacent two groups selected from R1 to R12 are bonded to each other to form a ring structure represented by formula (a): wherein each of R13 to R17 independently represents a hydrogen atom or a substituent group, a pair of adjacent two groups selected from R13 to R17 may be bonded to each other to form a saturated or unsaturated divalent group which completes a ring, and *1 and *2 are bonded to carbon atoms to which the at least one pair of the adjacent two groups selected from R1 to R12 are bonded.
