Improvements in or relating to machines for applying and drying adhesive

A machine for applying powdered adhesive to a flat surface still wet with liquid adhesive has mechanised means for moving the flat surface, means for applying liquid adhesive, a chamber for holding powdered adhesive and means within the chamber for applying, removing excess and returning excess of powder to the bottom of the chamber. Fig. 1 shows the complete apparatus as used for making envelopes. The blank a is fed into a hopper end c, partly made by devices d and e and both flaps then coated with liquid adhesive at h. One end is now folded whilst the other is powdered with dry adhesive inside W, details of which are shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The motor 17 drives the inside members via the gears enclosed in 18 and shown in Fig. 8. The edge of the surface enters W along 27 into gap 28 which is sealed by mohair 29, powdered adhesive is applied by the rotating fluted wheel 69 which has powder deposited on to it from vibrating hopper 75. Powder is fed to 75 from the bottom of W by flights 35 carried on endless chain 37, which is mounted on wheels 38 and 39 and driven by wheel 42 on shaft 66. The powder at the bottom of W is kept loose by arms 52 actuated by crank 50. The surface edge is now deflected by member 90 and excess powder removed by rotary brushes 85 mounted on shaft 61 which is driven by spiral gear 59 on shaft of motor 17. Suction inside the casing is maintained by fans 71 and 88 but may also be applied by an outside fan and duct leading to a bag. The hopper 75 and associated mechanism may be replaced by a brush and a notched wheel may replace the chain and flights 35. U.S.A. Specification 1,144,506 is referred to.
