In a process for refining ores, such as manganese, silica and chromite, the ore is powdered to pass 80 mesh, in the case of manganese and chromite and 30 mesh in the case of silica, and fines, agitated with an emulsifying agent in solution and the bulk, after removal of the emulsifying agent and with or without previous mechanical treatment, is subjected to the action of a solvent to remove any impurities remaining, the refined ore being separated from the solvent and dissolved impurities. In an example, chromite is treated for 20 minutes with a 0.5 per cent solution of sodium silicate, washed twice with clean water after the removal of the silicate solution by decantation or syphoning, the purified ore mechanically treated in a fine meshed jigger, treated with sulphuric acid, of strength 1 volume of acid to 4 volumes of water, for 5 hours at simmering heat and washed twice with water after the acid treatment. The refined ore may be subjected to a further jigging treatment after washing. Potassium silicate, glue, gelatine and starch paste may also be used as emulsifying agents. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the refining of graphite which is not treated with an emulsifying agent but is treated with a solvent to remove impurities. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
