摘要 <p>A method of characterising a radio frequency traffic channel is disclosed. A sequence of bits is sent from a transmitter to a receiver at a first amplitude. An error rate of the channel is calculated based on which bits are accurately received. This error rate is used to calculate a second amplitude differing from the first by a first difference. A further sequence of bits is sent at the second amplitude and a new error rate is calculated. If the new error rate differs from a target error rate by more than a predetermined amount, a third amplitude is calculated which differs from the first by less than the first difference; if less than the predetermined amount, a third amplitude is calculated which differs from the second amplitude by an amount calculated using the new error rate. The method may be applied for each channel separately. The noise level may be assumed to be constant for each channel, but if it is assumed to be variable, statistics may be gathered on the percentage of bits accurately received.</p>
