<p>The present invention is concerned with combined satellite 1, 3 and terrestrial 9 communication systems where the two systems cooperate to provide communication services to dual mode terminals 11. For example, the terrestrial system may act as a repeater for the satellite system. Such communication systems are referred to as complementary ground component (CGC) or ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) systems in the prior art. The satellite and terrestrial systems reuse the same frequencies, which creates potential for interference. The present application proposes methods for inhibiting such interference. These include interference cancellation at the terminal 11 (claim 4), satellite earth station 3 (claim 5) or terrestrial base station 9 (claim 6); arranging satellite 12 and terrestrial 13 antennas of the terminal on opposite sides of an aircraft fuselage (claims 10-12); or using directional antennas orientated to reduce interference (claims 14-21). The invention finds particular application in vehicle mounted terminals, e.g. in aircraft or maritime vehicles.</p> |
