<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multimode interference device capable of performing polarization independence for an optical distributor, a cross element between different polarized waves, and an optical switch. <P>SOLUTION: A multimode interference device 10 has a first end part 12a and a second end part 12b each having width W and arranged on both ends in an optical transmission direction. Further, the multimode interference device 10 includes a first port 14 formed on the width-direction center of the first end part, a second port 16 formed on the inside only by W/4 from either one of width-direction both ends of the first end part, and a third port 18 and a fourth port 20 respectively formed on the inside only by W/4 respectively from the width-direction both ends of the second end part. The length L of an optical transmission direction is determined so that when TE polarized light is inputted from the first port, the TE polarized light is uniformly distributed to the third port and the fourth port, and when TM polarized light is inputted from the second port, the TM polarized light is uniformly distributed to the third port and the fourth port. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT</p> |
