An image forming apparatus including a photoreceptor including a photosensitive layer on a surface of an electroconductive substrate and a light irradiator configured to irradiate the photoreceptor with a light beam having a wavelength lambda represented in units of micrometers and a diameter of phi represented in units of micrometers to form a dot latent image on the photoreceptor, wherein a maximum height in a part of a profile of the lower surface of the photosensitive layer in a sampling range of phi is not less than lambda /(2n), where n is a refractive index of the photosensitive layer at the wavelength lambda .
