[Class 53] An accumulator is closed by a slab of non- metallic material which is secured in position by moulding a frame of a different material round the edge of the slab and then uniting the frame with the material of the accumulator casing. The closing slab may be of ceramic material having a lead frame cast round its edge. The frame is secured to the lead container by burning. The slab may be porous so that electrolyte may be introduced into the accumulator by pouring it on the top of the slab. Fig. 1 shows a cell having a lead casing 10 in an outer insulating shell 11 and forming the support for the negative active material 12 which is separated from the positive electrode 13 by porous material 16. The cell is closed by a porous ceramic slab 18 round which is cast a lead frame 19 which is burned to the casing 10. The upper surface of the slab is provided with a groove 22 into winch, a filling funnel 24, leads and with a central .opening 21 for the lug 15. The lug 15 is heated till it. melts and fills the opening 21, the terminal strap 28 being burnt in position. at the same time. The slab 18 is covered with an ebonite disc 23 and sealing composition 32. When electrolyte is introduced into the funnel 24 it fills the groove 22 and percolates through the slab 18. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the porous slab 34 with its lead frame 19 burnt to the casing 10 is covered by, a rubber stopper 39 which is removed, when the cell is, to be filled with electrolyte which is poured on the upper surface of the slab. In a cell in which the positive terminal projects through the lower end the bottom of the cell may be closed by a slab of ceramic material which may be rendered impervious by glazing. Alternatively the slab may be porous and covered with pitch or other sealing composition. In both constructions the slab is provided with a lead frame which is burnt to the lower end of the casing. Fig. 7 shows a cell employing plate electrodes and a casing 50 of insulating material. A frame 52 is moulded. round the porous slab 51 and is cemented or vulcanised to the casing 50. An ebonite lid 53 is cemented or vulcanised to the frame 52 and is provided with a stoppered vent 60 through which electrolyte is introduced into the space 61 whence it percolates into the cell through the slab 51. The slab may be made of materials other than ceramic materials and the frame surrounding it may be of a mouldable material other than lead such as rubber or synthetic resin and it may be seated into the casing by cementing or other means. |
