[Class 46] To enable a filter cartridge to be used in the lubricating of an internal combustion engine either on the " bye-pass " system where oil may bye-pass the filter but enter the normal filtrate channel, or on the " shunt " system where unfiltered oil passes, not into the filtrate channel but to other parts of the lubricating system, the cartridge is provided with a base portion 30 and openings 22 into a face for a support 40, Fig. 4, on a central filtrate drainage pipe 16, or a support 36, Fig. 2. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, oil which does not pass through the filter 13 can pass through openings 19, 21 on a base portion 30 and openings 22 onto a space 23 which communicates with the inside of the pipe 16 through an opening at the upper end of the pipe. The support 40 is secured by spring rings 42, 43 to the pipe 16 which as shown in Fig. 3 forms part of the means for clamping the cartridge within a casing 10. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 the support 36 covers holes 21 and prevents oil from bye-passing the filter to the discharge pipe 16. In this case unfiltered oil when at a sufficient pressure leaves the filter casing through an outlet fitted with a spring-pressed valve. The cartridge comprises disc members with radial slots alternating with spacer members in the form of spokes with slots overlapping the slots in the disc members.</p> |
