Substances of nutritional value to nonherbiverous animals and poultry in forage crops such as grasses, clover, alfalfa and legumes which have been harvested in the green state and artificially dried are rendered more readily assimilable by steeping the dried crop in hot or cold water or an acidified aqueous solution, following an optional preliminary treatment with a fat solvent to remove fat-soluble vitamins, separating the liquor from the pulp, concentrating or drying the liquor and desiccating the pulp. The dried liquor or both the dried liquor and the desiccated pulp, or a mixture of the untreated, dried forage crop with the dried liquor the desiccated pulp, or both the dried liquor and the desiccated pulp may be employed for supplementing food for animals, especially poultry. A table of experimental results demonstrates weight increases in groups of chicks receiving such supplements together with a basal diet, of composition stated, containing the proteins, fats, carbohydrates, salts and known vitamins for chick growth.ALSO:Substances of nutritional value in forage crops such as grasses, clover, alfalfa and legumes which have been harvested in the green state and artificially dried are rendered more readily assimilable by steeping the dried crop in hot or cold water or an acidified aqueous solution, following an optional preliminary treatment with a fat solvent to remove fat-soluble vitamins, separating the liquor from the pulp, concentrating or drying the liquor and desiccating the pulp. |
